I’ve always had a thing for Ampeg amps. So when I started looking at Amplitube 2, I naturally checked out the Ampeg SVX software, too.
I mean…
- 4 bass amps
- 6 cabinets
- 6 microphones
- 8 stomp effects
- … and a tuner?
This is all modeled on Ampeg gear. So basically what this represents is a virtual room full of Ampeg bass amps, along with virtual versions of some nice Ampeg stomp pedals. Nice!
The best thing about this software is that I’ve configured unique bass set-ups for each of my basses and saved them as pre-sets. So any time I pull up a certain bass, all I have to do is load the amp rig I’ve already tweaked for it.
Like some other folks, I think the effects are a little weak, but the tone modeling of the amplifiers is very convincing. I sometimes route the signal out of the computer and run it through my M-One effects processor and a BBE Sonic Maximizer. After that, I don’t think Jack Bruce himself would be able to tell the real thing from the software.
I’ve gotten such good bass sounds from the Ampeg SVX software that I briefly considered selling my Alembic F-2B preamp. That probably says all that needs to be said about it.
